Vatican City, also known as the Vatican City State, is a landlocked sovereign city-state whose territory consists of a walled enclave within the city of Rome. It has an area of approximately 44 hectares, and a population of around 840. One of the smallest sovereign states on Earth, it is the sovereign territory of the Holy See, and is ruled by the Pope.
Contained within the walls of Vatican City are St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and the vast bureaucracy required by the large and complex organization of the Roman Catholic Church.
In 1979, a recently ordained Andrew Hagen received a posting at the Vatican as a favor to Michael Corleone from Archbishop Gilday. Shortly after Andrew Hagen began his assignment at the Vatican, he encountered Michael after the later had angrily stormed out of a meeting of the Vatican Bank.
Later in 1980, Archbishop Gilday was assassinated at the Vatican by Al Neri, who threw the deceased Archbishop's body down a stairwell.
