Sicily.

Sicily is an island at the base of Italy. It is known as the birthplace of Cosa Nostra.

In 1891, Vito Corleone (born Andolini) was born in the small village of Corleone in Sicily. After his parents and brother were killed by Corleone's Don, Francesco Ciccio, Vito fled the country and left to find his future in the America.

Vito returned to Sicily in 1923 to exact vengeance on Ciccio with the help of his friend Lionele Tommasino, who became the new Don. Vito left to America once more, his vengeance fulfilled.

His son Michael fled to Sicily in 1946, after murdering drug kingpin Virgil Sollozzo and his bodyguard Captain McCluskey, seeking refuge with Tommasino. Whilst here, Michael married his first wife Apollonia and later saw her killed at the hands of his trusted bodyguard Fabrizio. He left shortly afterwards and did not return again until 1980, where he came to watch his son Anthony perform at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo. It was here that Michael's daughter Mary was murdered.

History

Sicily is notorious for being one of the most violent territories in Europe due to a history of the many wars fought on the island. It was once the reason of the First Punic War between Rome and Carthago. Sicily was also invaded by the Moors and later Spain, was part of Napoleon's France and was a violent battlefield during World War II.
